Increasing food self-sufficiency, especially rice grown as intercrops, requires attention to the development ofupland varieties that are shade-tolerant and capable of high production. The objective this research tostudy about mechanism tolerance, morphological characters characterizing tolerance shade. Theresearch was carried out in Cengkeh Turi Binjai with an altitude ± 32 meters above sea level, soil pH;4.5, started from May August 2018. study used a split plot design two factors. first factorwas light intensity, consist of: 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%. second factor consisted 5 varieties,namely: Inpago 5, Lipigo 4, 8, 10, 2. result increase thearea flag leaf decrease sunlight intensity by 75%. conclusion is thelower sunlight, lower angle thickness upland leaf.Keywords: light; rice;
